Shawn Allison named 2011 Max Janowski Young Artist, and SPCO reading sessions

I am pleased to announce that I was recently named the 2011 Max Janowski Young Artist by KAM Isaiah Israel Congregation.  The prize, named for the synagogue’s long-time music director (he was director from 1938 until his death in 1991), has a storied past, and I am humbled to be included among its recipients, the most famous of which are Itzhak Perlman and Anthony McGill. The focus of the award is a recital featuring the young artist. In the past, the artist has been a performer, but since I have been active as both a composer and performer, the concert will begin with a short program of music for saxophone which I will perform, and the bulk of the program will be premieres of recent works that I have written for the concert. Right now, there are four world premieres planned for the concert, which will be on April 9th. Look here for details on the concert in the coming weeks!

Also, on Jan. 28th, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra will be reading and recording my latest work, a short sketch for chamber orchestra entitled Veils of the Morning, as part of their annual readings of works by University of Chicago graduate student composers. The work is inspired by a stanza from William Butler Yeats’s classic poem The Lake Isle of Innisfree, and focuses on orchestrating layers of pulsing light, rhythmically mimicking the ebb and flow of water and wind. A solo violin presents a thin, meandering melody which pops up periodically through the mist, joined by different combinations of instruments to highlight different characters present in the violin sound.
